A Brief History of the Denver Wholesale Florists

DWF began in Denver in 1909 as a partnership of Colorado flower growers.Flower delivery was much different than today as shown in this 1910 photo.
DWF’s first corporate headquarters were in the basement of the Wynne Hotel in downtown Denver. In the 1930s the company sold its product in the Denver Public Market pictured above.
From its inception the main product was carnations. By 1945 the company was marketing approximately 6 million carnations a year, along with roses and other miscellaneous flowers.
By the 1970’s Colorado was the carnation capital of the world with DWF leading the way. The company sold over 100 million carnations annually.
During the late 1960’s and 1970’s, carnations and pompoms began to be grown in Bogota, Columbia. By the 1980’s significant flower production had moved to South America. With the decrease in US production, DWF reinvented itself by forging strong relationship with growers in other countries.
Today, DWF is a leader in partnering with the premier growers and hardgoods suppliers in the floral industry. In 2008, DWF became an Employee Owned Company and looks forward to a bright future for its next 100 years.
